- Connecting contemporary African musics with diasporic communities.
- Since 2015, Crudo Volta has been using a variety of media to document modern African music cultures and their intersection with the greater diaspora. Using film, sound and text, the project has documented the rise of gqom, released music detailing the feedback loops between continent and diaspora, and shined light on forms from Alté to Coupé Décalé in its Taxi series of films.
The project was founded by Mike Calandra Achode and bears the mark of his expertise in graphic design and music. Rejecting design's inherent connection to western industrialisation and consumer culture, Achode seeks to place projects within an African economy. Rather than ascribe authorship to himself, he describes Crudo Volta as an organically growing community of collaborators and friends united by their passion for the continent's myriad subcultures, and connecting it to diasporic communities worldwide.
For this edition of RA's ongoing collaboration with Black Minds Matter, Andrew Mensah hears the stories behind Crudo Volta's projects and Achode's perspective on the politics of design, the economics of contemporary Black music and the mental health benefits of walking.
