- Holden's third LP, his first since 2013, is out via Border Community in November.
James Holden will release his latest album through Border Community on November 3rd.
Holden produced and mixed The Animal Spirits, which was recorded live in his Sacred Walls studio in single takes, with no overdubs and no edits. The album is named after Holden's newly expanded live band, which now includes Tom Page of RocketNumberNine, Etienne Jaumet, Marcus Hamblett, Liza Bec and Lascelle Gordon, with Holden describing the outfit as "something like a spiritual jazz band playing folk/trance music."
The Animal Spirits's lead track, "Pass Through The Fire," was partly inspired by Holden's collaborations with Moroccan Gnawa musician Maalem Mahmoud Guinia. "This was where I got the idea that songs are just backbones or seeds and the strong ones teach/reveal themselves to the players rather than the other way round," Holden says.
It's Holden's first full-length since The Inheritors, which was Resident Advisor's number one album of 2013.
