- Known as Arthur's Landing, the group will release their first album in early 2011.
!K7 sub-label Strut has unveiled details for the first album by Arthur's Landing, an Arthur Russell tribute group formed by eight of the late cellist's collaborators.
Up until his death from AIDS in 1992, Russell played with dozens of musicians in a variety of groups around New York City, including acts like The Flying Hearts, The Sailboats and celebrated disco outfits Dinosaur L and Loose Joints. Arthur's Landing is made up of artists who worked alongside Russell in these projects, as well as some who contributed to solo records like Another Thought. "We've been playing our friend Arthur's music for thirty years but never get tired of it because we find his legacy to be an open source of dazzling inspiration," says Steven Hall, the group's frontman and Russell's friend and collaborator since the late '70s. "As troubadours on this sonic pilgrimage we celebrate and strive to share our unique and intimate knowledge of the material."
Arthur's Landing draws from all eras of Russell's career, from late solo works like "This Is How We Walk On the Moon" to the Loose Joints classic "Is It All Over My Face" (re-named here simply as "Love Dancing"). Lesser-known and previously unreleased tracks are included as well, such as "I'll be Fencing," which never made it past the demo stage until now. The album will be available on CD and LP from January of 2011.
