- Jack Dixon and Rick Grant present two different sides of the same bass/house coin with their debut on George FitzGerald's Man Make Music imprint. The first, "Running Man" almost falls over itself in its mission to move you forward. The kinetic energy of the scratching percussion and punchy left-right kick combos are offset by calmer, warmer pads in a way not too dissimilar from the boss's own shiny sonic output.
Second offering "Muted" is just that—a more insular and introspective downbeat bass fusion that wallows in echo and reverb as drums and percussion rise and fall like the gentle undulations of a warm tidal swell. The whole thing soothes and calms like post-whatever sounds so often do not. Quite possibly stealing the limelight at the last is Kevin McPhee's stripped down remix. It's a shuffling (rather than bounding as per the other two tracks) underwater lullaby anchored by melancholic kicks. Much more focus is put on the lingering piano notes of the original, letting it idle in both your heart and head for much longer.
