Levon Vincent in Melbourne

  • In an inconspicuous laneway adjacent the coveted Degraves St sits The Liberty Social, an eight-month-old self-proclaimed "shitty bar." Indeed, the venue itself is anomalous—stripped back to the structural wireframes. Luckily, the club holds an ethos that places import on the people and the playlist. It seemed fitting, then, that the club would abode New York house and techno luminary Levon Vincent's debut Melbourne performance. Following their staggering debut outing with Fred P, the night's promoters, Sound of Thought collective, had set a remarkably high standard. Vincent took to the decks at 2:00 AM following a sweltering warm-up by local stalwart Bryce Lawrence, and eased swiftly into a rhythm in which he allowed his records to pave the journey for the evening. Swirling between deep house and acidic techno, Vincent began by rinsing Pierre's Pfantasy Club's "Fantasy Girl" alongside Carl Craig's mix of Tony Allen's "Kilode," before shifting into deeper territory with his own "Double Jointed Sex Freak Pt. 2." Maintaining a dubbed and twisted aesthetic throughout, he drew his set to a close after two hours, and allowed Josh Reynolds to ensure the revelry continued well into the night, going on to drop Mike Dunn's omnipresent "Phreaky MF" and Carly Simon's "Why" in the hours before the bouncers drew the lights on a virtually bursting club at 7 AM.
