Kuedo - Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space

  • Severant, last year's debut full-length from Jamie Vex'd as Kuedo, continues to reverberate: at once futuristic and old-school, floor-ready and loner-rific, coherently on the bass continuum yet utterly unclassifiable, it's a record of delicious contrasts and contradictions, as much its own thing as anything out there right now. Coming from the same sessions that spawned Severant, "Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space" is both of a piece with that material and an obvious candidate for its own release, with more twists, turns, highs and lows than most full albums. But despite its bombast, the track never quite explodes, with Kuedo instead folding its mile-long synths back on themselves while we revel in their inevitable unraveling. Speaking of coherence, Planet Mu wisely paired Kuedo's madcap original with remixes from a couple of likeminded travelers. Like the original version, the mix from Brooklyn's Laurel Halo doesn't develop linearly so much as it meanders, sinking its teeth into gorgeously gooey chords and spending the better part of five minutes swishing them around. Claude Speeed, part of LuckyMe trio American Men, makes blurry work of the original's melody before channeling its pent-up energy into an unexpectedly battle-ready drum solo from PINKNOISE's Jivraj Singh. All told, it's quite an atypical package, light on club fodder but stuffed with big sounds you'll want to hear nice and loud.
