- Cosmin TRG's sophomore album, Gordian, was a natural extension of a template laid out on his debut LP, Simulat. Both were distinguished by Cosmin Nicolae's focus on predominantly 4/4 beats. For the first in a series of Gordian remixes, 50 Weapons offers darker takes on his greasy techno, from Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann and PAN affiliate Lee Gamble.
Critics of Dettmann's productions tend to perceive them as plodding and humorless, but his rework of "New Structures For Loving" shows just how much mileage he can get from a limited palette. The drone elements and sudden inclusion of choppy hi-hats give the track flexibility the lumbering bassline would otherwise seem to impede, and a desperate kettle boiling over becomes an unsettling accent. While the original "Noise Code" was full of mellow oscillations and suggestive empty space, Lee Gamble fills his version with disparate additions. Rather than subverting the material as he's done on past remixes, Gamble ghosts over it with tearful pads and awkward changes. The ricocheting rhythms suggest Kassem Mosse's haphazard sensuality, but the track otherwise fades from the mind.
