- Danilo Plessow's seemingly Detroit-referencing moniker is actually a nod to his upbringing in Germany's car capital, Stuttgart. But if the name is less immediately inspired by techno's birthplace, you couldn't say the same of his music. It's fitting that the first remixes of the Raw Cuts series, which announced him as a house music force, should come from three of Detroit's foremost sons.
All three versions are deep, organic affairs, though Recloose just pips his compatriots in the dreaminess stakes. In his hands "Raw Cuts #5" turns from chunky house groove to string-heavy roller that slides round you like warm treacle. The others keep things more aligned with the original tracks' raw ethos. Huckaby wraps subs around some chest-thumping kicks, and swirls his organs to fashion an early-hours hypnotiser. Marcellus Pittman's take is more suited to an opening set, with the licks clean and bongo-riddled rather than warped and narcotic. The news that Raw Cuts is wrapping up is disappointing but any sadness should be allayed by the quality of its wake.
