- Doubt is the alias of a Minneapolis producer who has chosen to remain in the shadows for now. He impressed earlier this year with Remember Fono, a dank and dusty techno 12-inch that sounded quite like DVS1, whose Mistress label released the EP. That's the case again on Poor Dog's title track, whose fluttering keys and gently undulating bass recall the first couple of tracks on DVS1's impressive Black Russian EP. "When I Was Young" instantly feels more menacing, a thudding kick drum competing for scariness points with glowering synth echoes. Things lighten briefly through some flickering hats, but they're soon submerged again in the droning murk.
"Dios" starts by throwing heavy objects down the stairs, before a pinging vocal snippet and some bass growlings take centre stage. The bass eventually overwhelms everything save for stark percussion and a few half-screams. For a long while "Frosx" is no more than a basic meeting of standard-issue percussion and a wah-wahing synth, but it later heats up thanks to some almost rockabilly licks of distorted bass and jazzy little synth inflections. Previous Doubt cuts have been notable for coaxing lots of personality out of faceless techno ingredients. That's slightly less evident on Poor Dog, but this is still a very solid outing.
