- With only three releases to his name in just as many years, Erosion Flow (AKA Henrik Koefod) is in no rush to carve out his corner in dance music. Last year's self-titled EP for ManMakeMusic found the Copenhagen resident working on a strong, colorful house angle, and now Spectrums Vol. 1, the first in a two-part EP series for 3024, slants into hard-edged techno laced with a garage-y skip. Suffice it to say that Koefod has no problem mixing and matching his wide influences, so it's surprising how middle-of-the-road some of his latest tracks can sound.
"Da Heckler," the obvious standout, quickly outlines why Martyn's label picked up Spectrums. This heavy hybrid jumps, punches and sways like some of the Dutchman's best bass-loaded grooves, and has a dubwise tint akin to Great Lengths. Yet it doesn't paint Koefod as a copycat, instead expanding the vibrant eclecticism future Erosion Flow records could encompass.
"Gamma" also has a meaty thump, but plays things too straight and narrow. Not even the jittery 303 sequence can enliven the flat 4/4. Lone B-side "Emeralds" does better with a basic rhythm, tying percussive whacks, sidewinding synth notes and atmospheric glitter onto its steady pulse. There are certainly worse ways to spend five and a half minutes on the dance floor, but this one's unlikely to leave the kind of impression "Da Heckler" does.
