- Matrixxman's debut album, Homesick, laid down its sci-fi premise right from the start. With a heartbeat-like pulse and breathy mechanical sounds, "Necronomicon" sounded scarily like machine mimicking man. It was a bleak and contemplative nine minutes, announcing an album that would proceed to deftly pick its way through Detroit techno fetishisms and ambient pauses. As Andrew Ryce noted in his review, records of this kind aren't hard to come by. But the way Matrixxman approached the familiar with such variety and skill made it a real standout.
"Necronomicon" also kicks off Homesick's remix package, this time as a sleek dance floor collaboration with Vin Sol. There's nothing sluggish or sleepy about the new version. Like a more frantic reiteration of their other track together, "HMU (Hit Me Up)," it's teeming with the bleeps and blips of hyperactive computer processing.
Instance ramps up the dreamy "Earth Like Conditions" to make something a bit more iridescent, melodious and housey, while Mike Parker gets wonderfully trippy and spacey with his take on "Opium Den." It'll likely be Larry Heard's trio of Gherkin Jerks remixes that pique the most interest here. Their variations are subtle. All are fairly taut and punchy, with each one brandishing a unique breakdown around the three-minute mark. They sound like eerie trance, and in the best possible way.
