- If you've been following the Parisian house scene for the last few years, you might know that Dang-Khoa Chau is one of its key figures, a position achieved through his main moniker, D.K., and ties with the Antinote label. While his work is linked to Balearic themes of swimming pools and sunsets, Chau's sound has lately become more subdued and contemplative, shown by last year's collaborative LP with Suzanne Kraft. His first release of 2018 comes through the Music From Memory sub-label Second Circle, which proves to be an appropriate laboratory for experimentation.
The EP links Music From Memory's signature '80s ambient meditations with modern house grooves. This is heard particularly well on the title track, which seductively interlayers a Hiroshi Yoshimura-esque marimba with a raw bassline. "Stick To The Rules" expertly combines chameleonic melodies, exotic percussion and hypnotic delay effects. Chau tones it down on B-side without losing the avant-garde feeling, which comes across in "Rebound"'s freaky pads. "Wise Bird" ends the EP with an organic composition of melodies and chipping birds, completing Chau's move from a blue-tiled pool to a rainforest full of possibilities.
