- The Belarusian producer New Fear is associated with the eco-grime movement, a loose collective of producers who make experimental club music with ecological themes. But for his new release for the post-vaporwave label BLCR Laboratories, New Fear turns coats classic dance music sounds in a modern sheen. Mirage Chapter has two fulsome breakbeat cuts that hint at drum & bass, particularly "Descent," a chunky Prodigy-referencing cut with a late '90s Big Beat groove. Both tracks feature the kind of rich, three-dimensional synth sounds that defined electronic music back then, but the real genius of Mirage Chapter is in the house-leaning tracks.
The title cut has the same bouncy drum trickery as Shanti Celeste's "Loop One" (it also recalls vintage Kerri Chandler), but it's approached from experimental club perspective, with odd changes and exaggerated synth textures. Then there's "Hidden Passage," a garage-influenced workout loaded with old rave synths. There are shades of early eco-grime in the stuttering remix of "Hidden Passage," which sounds more like what we're used to from New Fear. Whether Mirage Chapter is a diversion or a new direction, it retains the quirkiness of eco-grime, one of electronic music's most curious corners.
