Loes Lee & Meneater - Personal Space

  • It's not often that we see a female producer making tracks in the breakbeats scene. Some have come to mind such as Tamsin, 10Sui and Sonia from Soto, but it has largely been dominated by the males, even on the floor. Loes Lee, whom I have never heard of before, steps out and produces a rabbit out of her hat. Yes this release has a bit of magic to it! Personal Space. Techy breaks usually don't appeal to me much as they are heavier on the top end instead of down below where I usually like, and it shows on the floor as well. It's usually the beat that gets people going and not some mad synth solo. However this track has the perfect balance of nice drum beat and techy sounds on top. It sounds great with the 303 like acid squelches, yet they're not overdone just enough to enhance the flavour on the track. However with all the madness going on, it's the bassline that really gets to me. There's actually two basslines in this track both playing the same "notes". One of them is just hiding amidst all the mayhem, then once it's had it's turn, a second bassline comes in to assist it adding a bit more squelch. Wow. I might need to re-think what I always thought about tech-breaks! Personal Space. (Dark Globe mix). Dark Globe's mix takes the squelch of the original and magnifies it several times to create this beast and that's only at the beginning. The bassline also gets upped in volume and we're also hit with some laser like sounds that came straight from some cheesy 80's arcade shoot'em up. The beats sound a little more 2-steppy especially with the syncopated bass drums sounding like knife stabs to the chest. I am a little more impressed with this mix compared to the original as the production is awesome. Each element (beats, bassline and the techy sounds/samples) takes turn in being the prominent feature and then they all sound really good together as well. If you liked their Auto Erotic track they did with Boy George then this should appeal to you.
