- In case recent house enterprises for Dolly and Rush Hour left you in doubt as to where Dexter's heart lies, let this record serve as a reminder: electro is where it's at for Remy Verheijen. The style has found renewed popularity of late as part of a vague broken beat revival, so it seems only fair that this longstanding Dutch supporter—it's been eleven years since the wonderful "I Don't Care" was released—receives his dues. While not quite the landmark equal of that record, "Space Booty" is well-sculpted fidget funk. It's held together by one of those basslines that frequently lead to misspellings of the word "fat," and percussion that spars spasmodically with a melee of glitches. In spite of its wobbliness, the whole thing feels decidedly robust.
"The Fat Skinny People" is equally as bass-focussed, though this time with more Miami-esque envelopes than LFOs. As the eponymous refrain is looped and messed with throughout, you realise that Dexter's cunning lies not in the brash, but rather in more subtle touches: the slight filter on the hi-hats, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it rhythmic vocoder, all the pads and bleeps strewn with precision. The bonus version strips back some of these quirks and leaves a blueprint of beats and bass—fertile territory for a live mash-up in the club.
