Tim Toh - Ménage à Trois

  • It's curious that Tim Toh's biography credits him with bringing "a very casual and fun-loving demeanor to dance music." However easygoing he may be, what marked Toh out as a noteworthy newcomer was his particularly meditative take on deep house: danceable, for sure, but still the kind of nine-minute, 105 BPM tribal jams that you wouldn't immediately associate with a sunny disposition. For his Mild Pitch debut, Toh draws on that session-driven side of his studio persona, as well as his growing taste for more upfront fare, as hinted at with the whipped piano frenzy of "Floral" on last year's Philpot 50 compilation. "Sexual Campfire" is loaded with whimsy, via chirping phrases of nighttime critters, handclaps and sprightly, flitting keys, but he keeps the sweetness in check with a swollen kick drum and stretched vocals, and momentarily clouds over the melody in the centre, transforming it briefly into a darker acid phrase. "Abundant" takes those same flooded drums then sleepwalks off the nature trail with them in the dead of night. It's a simple arrangement with one-note organ stabs, but its raw percussion loop, woozy synths and bubbling elastic distortion turn it into Toh's roughest, most trance-inducing track yet. Label head Manuel Tur bridges the gap between the two original cuts with a remix of "Abundant" that balances out the sound spectrum with less of the abrasive analog treatment, and more orderly drum programming and sprinkles of wind chimes. Ménage à Trois may not be as fun-loving as it's intended to be, but that's a misunderstanding that continues to work in the young producer's favour.
